ADD2PD-0.EXE
" DOCS "
This program has been released as a BETA test to Bold and Daring
SYSOPs! These SYSOPs have no Fear of Losing ALL of their data on
their RBBS system drive. (If you are more Prudent, you can always
place the required files on a sub-directoried floppy for a test!)
The program is menu driven, so no real documentation is required.
A couple items of interest, regarding shortcomings and hacking
may be in order tho....
First off, this was written by an 'old' man. Self-educated in the
ways of computing. It is not a PROFESSIONAL job. Just a program
that I needed when I had trouble setting up the PERSONAL Download
area of RBBS 16.1a. I thought others might have a use for it also
and the thing seemed to escalate into a monster. The first thing
I am sure will bring about complaints is the description length
of the files. It is one size and one size ONLY! 43 Characters!
That happens to be the size I use for my FMS directory, so it is
the same here, 43 characters. I modeled the program after ADD2FMS
but it is not near as 'slick'. (The <C/R> for todays date is my
contribution as a good idea.) I have not made the checking for a
Valid User 'selectable' which it probably should be. If you enter
a users Name (ID), it will be compared with your Users File to
to see if it is Valid... If it is NOT valid, it is still entered
but you are well aware of the fact! (My idea for correcting names
that are misspelled!) The major shortcoming of the program for
this release is that a Security Level CANNOT be entered in place
of a Users ID, although the ID is (hopefully) the Beginning and
Length you use for your identification of users. I use RBBS's
default of 1 and 31 and that works fine.
IF you want to jump right in an give this program a try, just put
it in your Private Download directory (PD). Fire it up, it should
ask you for directions to your RBBS-PC.DEF file and directions to
its location. You will then be presented with the Main Menu. At
this time, select either READ RBBS-PC.DEF FILE or Select MANUAL
CONFIGURATION. After making your choices, it will write the info
to a file called ADD2PD.CFG. After this file is available to the
program, you will not have to do it again. (Unless you want to
try to set things up for more than 1 node - ANOTHER SHORTCOMING!)
You may then begin to enter files into your Private Download dir-
ectory. I don't recommend trying to VIEW previously entered files
unless they fit the correct format this program uses, but NO harm
should come if you try. After entering a few, try the various
options and see how things go. Of course, you cannot remove any
files that * HAVE BEEN DOWNLOADED * because any that you enter
will not fit that criteria. If you want, go in with your favorite
word processor and change the '*' to a '!' then you will be able
to remove 'RECEIVED' files.
Best I can tell you is to FOOL around with it for a while. You
will find what it can do and cannot do. I do believe it will be
benificial to busy sysops that can live with the constraints that
the program imposes.
Comments (good or otherwise) are welcome. Source code will NOT
be provided - I don't want anyone making fun of it!!! [QB4]
